Arboretum Loismann

The history of the Arboretum Loismann starts with the construction of the Dortmund-Ems-Canal in the year 1895.
With the excavated soil a mound was heaped upon the land of Bernhard Loismann, with a surface of around 2 hectares and it had a height of nearly 6 metres.
The surface could not be used agricultural anymore and the initially planted fruit trees didn't yield the wanted harvest.

Plant lover Bernhard Loismann planted on the mound indigenous and exotic trees and copse species.
And so in the course of years an interesting tree population was created, which received an award already by the German Dendrological Society in the year 1924.
The tree population has been preserved essentially till today and is still being looked after by the family Loismann.

The attractions are the, by now, 30m high North-American redwood and the 20m high Honoki-magnolia, which blooms in summer.
