Nature Reserve 'Heiliges Meer'

An eldorado for nature lovers is the nature reserve Heiliges Meer (Holy Sea). According to the legend, there was once a monastery with monks, who didn't subscribe to a devout life. As a punishment, the monastery was destroyed by lightning during a heavy thunderstorm. Today, signposted circular hiking paths run through the nature reserve, which has Westphalia's largest natural lake, originating from the sudden drop of underground cavities. The central point of the 'Heiliges Meer' is the biological station of the Landschaftsverband. An exhibition and a slide show will inform you about the nature reserve's history, the originating of the lake as well as flora and fauna. On offer are also courses for persons interested in natural history and excursions for groups.

The entry to the nature reserve is free-of-charge.
